Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Write content that AI uses directly as answers
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring content that gets picked up directly as answers by AI systems. This means: clear question-answer structures, FAQ schemas, short definition paragraphs, and Schema.org Question/Answer markup.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the art of formatting content as direct answers. AI systems don't search for web pages, they search for answers. When a user asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, these systems search their knowledge base for the most concise, accurate, and authoritative answer.
AEO differs from traditional content creation by focusing on answer quality above all else. Instead of long, narrative texts, you write structured blocks with a clear question and a direct answer. This is what AI systems can process and cite best.
The core of AEO is simple: if someone asks a question about your field, your content should contain the best possible answer in a format machines understand. This doesn't mean your content has to be boring or robotic. It means you think strategically about structure and format.
AEO Best Practices
The first best practice is the FAQ format: structure content as questions and answers. Use h2 or h3 headers with the question and begin the answer directly in the first sentence. AI systems recognize this pattern and prioritize it when generating citations.
The optimal length for a citation snippet is 40-60 words. This is long enough to provide a complete answer but short enough to be cited in its entirety. Start each answer with the conclusion or definition, followed by a brief explanation and optionally an example.
Use Schema.org markup to make your content machine-readable. FAQPage schema explicitly tells AI systems that your content contains questions and answers. Question/Answer microdata marks individual Q&A pairs. The AnswerCapsule pattern combines visual formatting with Schema.org markup for maximum effect.
Implementing AEO on Your Website
Step 1: add FAQ sections to every important page. Identify the top 3-5 questions your audience asks about the page topic and answer them concisely and authoritatively. Use Schema.org FAQPage markup.
Step 2: create definition paragraphs. Start important sections with a short, factual definition of the topic. Use the format: '[Topic] is [definition].' This is the pattern AI systems cite most frequently. Visually mark these paragraphs with border-l-4 styling.
Step 3: structure your headers as questions. Instead of 'Our Services,' write 'What AI services does AIFAIS offer?' This gives AI systems a direct signal that the answer to that question is in the following paragraph. Combine this with Question/Answer Schema.org markup for the best result.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO is a subset of GEO. GEO encompasses the full strategy for AI visibility, including technical optimization, llms.txt, and authority building. AEO specifically focuses on writing and structuring content as answers that AI systems can cite.
How many FAQ items should I have per page?
At least 2-3 FAQ items per page is a good start. Focus on the most asked questions about the page topic. Quality over quantity: each answer should be concise (40-60 words) and factual. Always use Schema.org FAQPage markup.
